Monreale and Cefalù Private Tour

Monreale and Cefalù Private Tour

Visit with us the splendid towns of Monreale and Cefalù in one day!

This tour includes some of the best religious edifices, UNESCO World Heritage Sites from 2015, that the Normans built in and around Palermo since they took the city over from the Arabs in 1072.

For this private guided tour we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles. After a 30-minute drive we arrive in Monreale, a city on a hill near Palermo. Its main attraction is the Cathedral of Monreale, one of the greatest examples in the world of the Arab-Norman architecture. Begun in 1174 by King William II, it is the large extent (6,500 m2, 69,965 ft2) of the impressive mosaics covering the interior which make this church one of the most splendid in the world! To be mentioned also the wonderful view of Palermo from the Cathedral's rooftop.

In just over 1-hour drive we then get to the splendid Cefalù, one of the most visited cities in Sicily. We go immediately for lunch at the best restaurant in town, literally by the sea! Then we go to the Cefalù Cathedral, dating from 1131: it's the first of the three Arab-Norman cathedrals built by the Normans. Its interior was restored in 1559 though the pointed arches of the nave, borne by ancient granite columns, are still visible; the only mosaics preserved are those of the apse and the last bay of the choir, remarkably fine specimens of the Byzantine art of the period. After the cathedral you will have some time for shopping!

Back to Palermo, the last landmark of this tour is the first church built by the Normans in Palermoap: San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi (Saint John of the Leper), back in 1071, at the beginning of the Norman attack to Palermo. After conquering the castle Yahia (of which only few traces remain), the Normans built on its ruins this church, following the canons of the Byzantine architecture.
