Sea and Mountains guided tour

Sea and Mountains guided tour

Palermo: different views, different emotions.

This tour links two extraordinary features of Palermo's landscape: sea and mountains. For these same features the Arabs, in 948, moved the capital city from Syracuse to Palermo and since then Palermo has been one of the most important cities in the Mediterranean area, and at those times the most important city of the Italian peninsula. The beauty of the city was intact after several centuries: the great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, in his book Italian Journey (1816-1817), described Mount Pellegrino as the most beautiful promontory in the world!

For this private guided tour we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles. We head firstly to Mount Pellegrino, indeed the first stop of our tour: after a 30-minutes drive uphill we arrive at something unique: the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, Palermo's patron saint. The sanctuary, build into and around a natural cave, guards the bones of Santa Rosalia, probably a woman of noble origins who lived in the 12th century under the first Norman king of Sicily. According to a tradition, the bones were found by a hunter in 1624, while a plague was scourging the city; always according to a tradition, the plague ended because of a miracle by her, hence she was made a saint to become soon the patron saint of the city. We then go to the top of the hill to admire a wonderful view of Palermo and its sea: time to take all the photos you like!

Getting back to Palermo we enter the Favorita Park, the largest city park in Europe. By driving under the canopies of its ancient trees we arrive in Mondello, once a fishing village now the main beach of Palermo and an area with wonderful villas mainly used as second houses. A walk along the coastline is unmissable as it looks like that of beaches on some islands in the Pacific Ocean!
