The largest archaeological park in Europe.

Selinunte is an ancient Greek colony on the southern coast of Sicily, between two rivers: once there, it is easy to understand why it became one of the most important colonies.

For this tour with English-speaking driver we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles: with a minimum of 3 people the vehicle is a luxury Mercedes-Benz 4x4 or a comfortable 8-seat minivan! To arrive at such lovely settings it takes about 100 minutes on a south-west direction. Selinunte was founded, according to the historian Thucydides, by a colony from the Sicilian city of Megara Hyblaea about 100 years after the settlement of that city (628 BCE), with the addition of a fresh body of colonists from the parent city of Megara in Greece.
The name is supposed to derive from the wild parsley (selinon in Ancient Greek) that still grows in the area. For the same reason, they adopted the parsley leaf as the symbol on their coins. Selinunte was the most Westerly of the Greek colonies in Sicily, and for this reason was early brought into contact and collision with the Carthaginians.

The modern archaeological park, the largest in Europe, can be divided into the following areas:
- the Acropolis at the centre, with Doric temples and fortifications. The settlement was surrounded by a wall (repeatedly restored and modified) with five towers and four gates;
- the Gaggera Hill in the West, where there are the remains of the very ancient Selinuntine sanctuary to the goddess of fertility: Demeter Malophoros;
- the Mannuzza Hill in the North with ancient housing, where the ancient agora was presumably located;
- the East Hill in the East, with three temples;
- the Necropoleis, that is the cemeteries.
