Erice and Segesta Private Tour

Erice and Segesta Private Tour

A plunge in time to visit two of the most extraordinary sites in Sicily

Who founded Erice and Segesta? According to the Greek historian Tucidides (460-396 BCE) we have, in fact, to go back to the Trojan War which, to the contemporary historians, did happen between 1275 and 1180 BCE. Consequently, the origin of the local population, the Elymians, is possibly related to the Trojans in exile, not to the Greeks. But it's just a hypothesis, even though the site is definitely not Greek!

For this private guided tour we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles. Segesta lies only about 2 hours away from Palermo (just enjoy the city’s West Coast!) but eons away in terms of history, culture, and mythology. You will immediately be immersed into a Medieval atmosphere as the city really looks like a Medieval one even though it is far more ancient... Erice is located on top of Mount San Giuliano, at around 750 metres (2,460 feet) above the sea level, overlooking the city of Trapani, the western coast towards Marsala, the dramatic Punta del Saraceno and Capo San Vito to the north-east, and the Aegadian Islands on the north-western coast, providing spectacular views. We find Eryx alluded to by Virgil and other Latin poets as a mountain of the first order of magnitude, associated with Mount Olympus (where the Gods lived...) and Mount Etna (home to Hephaestus, the God of Fire). On its summit stood a celebrated Temple of Venus or Aphrodite, founded, according to the current legend, by Aeneas. Nowadays Erice is a lovely and lively town with artisans of exceptional quality like weavers and ceramists. On the cultural side, Erice hosts important scientific meetings at the Ettore Majorana centre, and an annual Workshop on Molecular Gastronomy.
Before leaving Erice we will show you something really old and extraordinary!

From Erice it takes about 45 minutes to get to Segesta. Two are the monuments of the area: the Temple and the Theatre. On a hill lies an unusually well preserved Doric temple; built in the late 5th century BCE, it seems that was never actually finished. The temple is also unusual for being a Hellenic temple in a city not mainly populated by Greeks (bear in mind the Elymians weren’t from Greece!). The strange Greek theatre, that can be dated between the second half of the 4th century and the 2nd century BCE, is located at the top of Mount Barbaro, at about 440 metres (1,443 feet); recently restored, it is in use for various shows of both classical and modern theatre.

In about 1.5 hours we are then back to Palermo... but maybe your mind will still be wandering between history and mythology!
