The Knight's Castles 1

The Knight's Castles 1

Let’s venture out of the big city and, apparently, back in time
to understand why Medieval times were not, for everybody, sublime.

These castles are not far from Palermo, but the atmosphere is from another world: the Medieval world.

For this guided itinerary we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles: with a minimum of 3 people the vehicle is a luxury Mercedes-Benz 4x4 or a comfortable 8-seat minivan! It takes about 90 minutes to arrive at the Vicari Castle, which lies on a high rock overlooking the town of Vicari. Some historical sources affirm that the castle was built during Roman times; for sure, its refurbishment dates back to 1390 by Manfredi Chiaramonte, one of the most powerful barons of the Kingdom of Sicily: the Chiaramonte family claimed descent from Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor! The castle has been recently restored: from the rock it is easy to understand why this castle was so important to control the routes from the countryside to Palermo.

After a delicious lunch with a view of the Cefalà Diana Castle (photo above), we head to the castle. It is possible that the castle was originally built by the Greeks, but what we see nowadays was built after the second half of the 13th century, and later modified. Its position was important for strategic and military reasons, as it ensued a general control of the trade between the Val di Mazara, where grains were cultivated, and Palermo. In the same century, also this castle became part of the Chiaramonte family’s possessions. There are mainly the external walls of the castle; though it’s not easy to get into the castle (but not very hard: we have to climb a stepped-wall of the height of around 1.5 metres) the view of the valley from the inside of the castle is absolutely breathtaking… in fact it is in this castle that the idea of Palermo Walks started some years ago…
