The Knight's Castles 2

The Knight's Castles 2

From the Arabs to the Normans our history is full of wonders
that may be traced back to more ancient times, those of plunders.

This itinerary will let you know and see a very important part of the Sicily’s history and traditions.

For this guided itinerary we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles: with a minimum of 3 people the vehicle is a luxury Mercedes-Benz 4x4 or a comfortable 8-seat minivan! We head to the Arab Thermal Baths, the only one existing in Sicily. We don’t know for sure when they were built —maybe in Norman times— but what we do know is that they are a link between the Roman times and the Arab times, as both populations loved the baths.

Close to the Arab Thermal Baths lies the Marineo Castle (photo above), built by Francesco Beccadelli of Bologna in the 16th century as a country residence. After the Normans, in fact, more castles were built not only as strongholds but also as residences in the countryside; the castle not being a fortress doesn’t mean those were times of peace, though, for the ongoing war against the Ottoman Empire and for the constant threat represented by the Barbary pirates. In the castle you will also visit the ethno-anthropological museum, with many artifacts witnessing the transition between the old agricultural system and the new one, which started in the 1950s.

After a delicious lunch at a restaurant just opposite the castle, decorated with tools used in agriculture in the past centuries, we will attend, inside the castle, the Sicilian Puppet Theatre, inscribed in 2008 in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. The main characters are the paladins, the foremost warriors of Charlemagne’s court.
