Madonie 2 - The Peaks

Madonie 2 - The Peaks

For those who love mountains, castles, Medieval villages, and traditional food.

The Madonie are one of the principal mountain groups in Sicily, safeguarded in 1989 by the formation of the Madonie Geopark, a regional natural park. Within the park area there are outcrops of rocks which have been dated over a 200-million-year period and represent all aspects of the geology of Sicily apart from the current volcanic activity. Madonie Geopark is a member of the European Geoparks Network and the UNESCO Global Network of National Geoparks.

For this guided itinerary we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles: with a minimum of 3 people the vehicle is a luxury Mercedes-Benz 4x4 or a comfortable 8-seat minivan! It takes a bit less than two hours to arrive to Geraci Siculo, a nice town for its castle and mainly do to the fact that 40% of its territory is part of the park, so after a look at the remains of the castles we’ll enjoy a walk in the wood.

After lunch (keep in mind we’re not in a big city but in a small town, so only good and fresh food is available!) we depart to Gangi. The current settlement dates to 1300, when it was rebuilt on the Marone Mountain after its destruction in the course of the Sicilian Vespers War against the French rulers. In 2014 Fangi won the price for the most beautiful Medieval city in Italy: the reason? Its castle, its towers, its palaces…

It take two hours by car to get back to Palermo, of which half in the woods…

If you want to explore more of the area please have a look at the Madonie 1 - The Woods itinerary.
