The Madonie are one of the principal mountain ranges in Sicily, safeguarded in 1989 by the formation of the Madonie Geopark, a regional natural park. Within the park area lie outcrops of rocks which have been dated over a 200-million-year period and represent all aspects of the geology of Sicily apart from the current volcanic activity. The Madonie Geopark is a member of the European Geoparks Network and of the UNESCO Global Network of National Geoparks.
For this guided itinerary we will pick you up from your hotel or b&b with one of our vehicles: with a minimum of 3 people the vehicle is a luxury Mercedes-Benz 4x4 or a comfortable 8-seat minivan! After about 90 minutes we arrive in Castelbuono, especially famous for the castle around which the city grew up in the 14th century. The construction of the Castle mixes Arab-Norman features with others typical of the castles built during the Hohenstaufen (house of the emperor Frederick II, who moved the seat of the Empire to Palermo) rule of Southern Italy. The city is also important for Fiasconaro, a company whose name is linked to the quality of its panettoni and other pastries, so a stop at their bar is compulsory!
From Castelbuono we get to Collesano to have lunch in one of the best restaurants in the area: local products and high quality mixed with low prices.
After lunch it takes a nice walk in Piano Battaglia: it’s the only location near Palermo to practise winter sports, and it is surrounded by a beautiful beechwood. There are different tracks to enjoy the area, in any season!
From Piano Battaglia in half an hour we get to Petralia Soprana, the tallest city in the province of Palermo at 1.147 metres above the sea level; along the way you can definitely tell we are in the mountains, as the road crosses woods of oaks and hollies. Ancient Sicanian city (over 3.000 years ago), it’s reach in architecture and will be our stop for lunch (expect proper traditional food!).
